October is just around the corner! And while we're all still dazzled by the amazing pilot of Marvel's Agent's of SHIELD, there will be no time to recover. Awesome sci-fi and fantasy TV shows are gonna keep on coming for the next few weeks. So it's time to bring out your organizers and track these amazing new titles for next month!
October 6 - Witches of East End
Based on Mellisa de la Cruz’ novel, the Witches of East End is one of the few low-key items on our list. This 10 episode long show will be a “loose adaptation” of the book, so purists may want to keep their standards on a more reasonable scale –but we’re still expecting plenty of witchcraft and supernatural powers. One of the biggest changes will be that the Beauchamp daughters are no longer aware of their powers, while that sounds a little campy, we’re hoping that this turns out well. Besides, it’s going to be a Canadian production so that’s a definite plus.Watch the trailer here.
October 9 - Arrow Season 2
CW is showing that world that it can pull off a good superhero show without having to remove the “costumes” from the equation. Arrow’s Oliver Queen may still not be taking on the moniker of his DC counterpart, but he’s certainly got the costume and colors right. We’ve already seen the foundations of a greater DC universe with the inclusion (and origin) of Huntress in season 1, as well as having Deathstroke and a couple of other DC chracters in the origin/flashback sequences. Now we’re hearing news about a new Black Canary who is not Dinah Laurel Lance (is it wrong that we’re not fond of Laurel in this show?), and will be exhibiting the metahuman canary-cry ability (which Laurel doesn't seem to have). Yep, rumors are pointing to “powers” now appearing on the show. And before anyone starts saying that this can potentially lead to a bigger DC universe (*ahem*, Ollie’s role in the Dark Knight Rises is critical), here’s the BEST bit of news: Barry Allen will dropping from Central city.Watch the trailer here.
October 9 - The Tomorrow People
This one is based on an old British children’s series about humans with “special evolutions” that grant them special powers (more often than not, of the “tele”-variety; telepathy, telekinesis, teleportation, etc). So yes, Homo Superiors, or in other geek-culture terms: mutants. The CW seems to be happily embracing shows with superhuman powers, and that’s something to look forward to.Watch the trailer here.
October 9 - American Horror Story: The Coven
AHS is back and this time, the setting takes us all the extremely dark and paranoid world of the Salem-Witch-Burning era New Orleans. We have had this show give us major spooks with season one and gore in season 2. Now there is witchcraft mixed in with good old fashioned Voodoo (hoodoo?) and you’ve got the recipe for another spine tingling season. More creepy-sexy-scary fun? Yes please.Watch the teaser here.
October 10 - Once Upon a Time in Wonderland
It’s a live action Alice in Wonderland that gets spliced with the already existing Once Upon a Time TV series. Need us say more? Seriously, this show is going to be worth watching. Sophie Lowe makes for an interesting Alice, and the show looks like it will have as many bizarre twists and turns as the main show. Naturally, a combination of current-time events and flash back sequences will be used to showcase the various states of Wonderland.Watch the trailer here.
October 13 - The Walking Dead Season 4
AMC’s major zombie hit is now hitting the fourth season and yes, this time, things will get even more unpredictable. Season 3’s finale takes a bit of liberty from the books, but no purist can complain as Kirkman himself is working together the showrunners. Speaking of Kirkman, he will be directly working on a spinoff for the Walking Dead series. No details yet on that one, so let’s just leave it at that –waiting for this show to start is already exciting enough.Watch the trailer here.
October 15 - Supernatural Season 9
The skies are falling, or at least, the angels are. The Winchesters are about to have their hands full of angel issues as Metatron’s season ender gambit pays off and all the angels get booted out of heaven. But that bit aside, Crowley is still trapped inside the church for Sam’s little hell-closure project. And who knows how that will turn out. Yep, the first episode of this season will see plenty of action, a few answers, and whether we like or not, plenty more questions to be left unanswered. It’s a long way till we hear the next “carry on my wayward son”, and this journey is bound to be even more exciting than the last.Watch the trailer here.
October 22 – Ravenswood
Spinoffs are a hit or miss kind of thing, but in the realm of TV shows, they seem to thrive better than other mediums. Ravenswood focuses on the idyllic little town from Pretty Little Liars (which is set in the nearby town of Rosewood). And much like the core show it came from, Ravenswood is a teen drama mystery-thriller. The core plot this time around revolves around the curse of the town that is affecting the lives of the people living in it. Recurring PLL character Caleb takes on a leading role in this one, so we’re expecting Hanna to drop in every now and then.Watch the trailer here.
October 25 - Grimm Season 3
The Grimms and the Royal Families are after the keys and our favorite Portland cop is the only one standing in between of it all. Despite the slow first season, Grimm has slowly grown into a compelling action-mystery show about how one deviant Grimm has become a protector of the Wesen and keeper of the balance –all while juggling his relationship with his no-longer-amnesiac fiancĂ©(?), his untested alliance with his duplicitous Captain (who is also a Wesen), and the fact that other Grimms (or at least, his own mother) who don’t exactly agree with his don’t-decapitate-nice-Wesens stance. Good thing he’s got friends like his partner, Hank, and Monroe (a blutbad and easily our favorite character in the show). If you need a refresher on the highlights of season 2, watch it here.
October 25 - Dracula
After you finish watching the first episode of Grimm, here’s a reason to not switch the channel: UK based Carnival Films has a new vision based on the original Bram Stoker novel and this is something you will not want to miss. Daniel Knauf, who directed the cancelled-but-awesome Carnivale on HBO will be helming this all new take on the original vampire. In this show, ol’ Drac heads over to Victorian London seeking to destroy those who had caused his original downfall –all while disguising himself as an American businessman who specializes with modern science.Watch the trailer here.
