It has been quite a journey for the longest running science fiction TV series. As we count down the days and weeks to November 23, let us not forget this day, September 20. This day holds a very significant date for many of the people involved behind the scenes of the original series. Today is the day that they first started filming Doctor Who.
These initial photos of William Hartnell (the First Doctor), Carol Ann Ford (Susan Foreman), Jacqueline Hill (Barbara Wright), and William Russell (Ian Chesterton) are among the very first "in character shots" ever made. Originally meant to be featured on the cover of Radio Times. However, since the sci-fi genre then had such little fame, the cover photo went to photos of another series. That said, these exclusive photos Radio Times took at the Ealing Studios are of great importance to the show. They also feature the first appearance of the TARDIS in the set of the first episode, "An Unearthly Child".
